Saturday snapshot – a cat and a pair of crocs

Back in November Solan was playing with Kristin’s crocs, and ate large chunks of them. Personally I find crocs to be both ugly and uncomfortable to walk in, but Solan obviously found them tasty. We threw them away as soon as we discovered what he was doing, and watched him for a few days to be sure he didn’t get ill. Apart from spending some time throwing up large chunks of blue plastic, he was fine.

Then, two weeks ago he got really sick. An x-ray showed an obstruction and when it hadn’t moved after two more days the vet decided to operate on him on Tuesday. They found two bits of crocs, one in his stomac and one stuck in his intestines. So, it took 8 months, but those crocs sure became trouble in the end.

We sauntered off to Copenhagen after visiting him at the vets on Wednesday morning, and my sister stepped in as cat nurse. She posted this photo of him on Instagram. He wasn’t feeling any good at all.

Solan is illHe got better as the week went by, and was eating quite well again when we picked him up on Monday.

Solan looks a bit silly in his post-op suit. He didn’t really mind the body they had put on him to protect the wound, but it did get in the way when he was trying to give himself a bath, and he got really good at opening velcros. He was just a tiny bit offended when we fastened them again…

Solan fighting the velcroes and winning.Yesterday he had a final check up at the vet and finally got rid of the offending bit of clothing. This was celebrated by playing with my sock and showing off his new scar.

This was his third major medical emergency in less than a year and we’d like a long break from vet bills now.

To participate in the Saturday Snapshot meme you must post a photo that you (or a friend or family member) have taken and then leave a direct link to your post in the Mister Linky at that Saturdays Snapshot post at At Home With Books. Photos can be old or new, and can be of any subject as long as they are clean and appropriate for all eyes to see. How much detail you give in the caption is entirely up to you. All Alyce asks is that you don’t post random photos that you find online.

  1. Poor Solan. Eight months is a long time to have that ugly piece of croc in his stomach. Scary to think they won’t digest and are probably indestructible. Glad that he is feeling better now.

    • We’re glad it’s out too.
According to the vet it probably didn’t bother him much as long as it all stayed in his stomach, but when a part of it decided to move further on it really got painful.

  2. Oh poor Solan! It breaks my heart to see him in all those bandages.

  3. Yes, I can well imagine your ready for a break. He does look happy to be out of that harness, though :) what a relief!

  4. Isn’t it amazing what our animals can get into??? And the vet bills will absolutely kill you!! Glad he’s doing better! :)

  5. Poor thing. Glad you found the problem and solved it. I love my crocs though — they’re MaryJane crocs, so not as ugly as the usual ones. I’ve nearly worn them through the bottoms. My cats don’t seem interested in eating them.

  6. Oh, how no-fun!! No one enjoys such extensive vet work, especially kitty. I hope that’s the end of it for a long time. For all of you!!!

  7. Oh, that poor cat has had a difficult 8 months! So glad he’ still around to pose for a picture or two.

  8. What an amazing story. So glad that Solan is on the mend. I haven’t heard of cats chewing shoes before, although I did have a cat who liked to eat unusual foods like rockmelon and cobs of corn. Such a drama. I hadn’t seen that suit your vet used before either, our vets still use the Elizabethan collars to stop them chewing at stitches.

    • They tried one of those collars when he fractured his femur back in September. I think it lasted around 5 minutes each time we tried to put it back on. He was a lot less unhappy about the coat.
He eats a few weird, but luckily not dangerous, things like strawberry plants and dill. :-)

  9. I have never been able to stand crocs. I’m sorry your kitty has been so sick, but glad he’s healing well. He looked very cute even when all bandaged up.
