Book beginnings on Friday – July 6th. 2012

It’s been a while since I last joined this meme, but this week I’m back.

The German by Lee Thomas recently won the Lamba Award for best SF/Fantasy/Horror novel. I’ve bought it for my Kindle, but haven’t started reading it yet. It’ll be interesting as it’s more horror than I usually go for.

The German by Lee ThomasAnyway, it begins like this:

Prologue: Munich

Date unknown: Translated from the German
I remember a hole, deep and dark, with water pooling at the bottom like blood in an open wound. I rub my chest and scabs flake away like bits of autumn leaf, tubling down to float on the dark water. My thoughts twist tight, wrung like damp linen, each cease made permanent by the wrapping tension.

    • I don’t know really. I guess I’ll find out at some point. Frankly, I hope it’s not vampires. :-)

  1. Hi Eva,

I love those opening lines. They just set the scene superbly and ooze tension and suspense. I love the descriptive use of language, especially when he likens his thoughts to ‘wrung damp linen’.

I haven’t come across this book before, so having checked out the author’s website, it has gone straight onto my list. I am certain I shall enjoy this one and I hope that you do too.

    Thanks for sharing,

    Yvonne

  2. “I rub my chest and scabs flake away like bits of autumn leaf…”

Reading this made my teeth grit, like with pulled cotton or nails on a chalkboard–awesome!

    Very dark. I like it.

  3. Welcome back!

That sounds like it is going to be creepy. Probably not for me — I never read horror books.

Thanks for participating in Book Beginnings on Fridays. I’d like to drum up some more participants, and one idea I had was this: if you are on Twitter, please tweet a link to your post using the has tag #BookBeginnings. Maybe in connection with #FridayReads, if you participate in that twitter event. Thanks!
