A bunch of us readers are sharing the first lines of a book and we all link up at the Linky at Rose City Reader, take a trip over there to see the beginnings of other books. Everyone is welcome to join us.
This week I’m presenting another favorite book, The Dark Lord of Derkholm by Diana
Wynne Jones. I adore everything by Diana Wynne Jones, this one included. Tourists from our world on a tour in fantasyland, with a great cast from both worlds. What’s not to love?
“Will you all be quiet!” hissed High Chancellor Querida. She pouched up her eyes and glared round the table.
“I was only trying to say-” a king, an emperor and several wizards began.
“At once,” said Querida, “or the next person to speak spends the rest of his life as a snake!”
I have never read anything by her but keep hearing good things about her books. I like that beginning, draws you right in.
Hi Eva,
I have heard lots of good comments about this author and her books have attracted some excellent reviews.
Having said that, fantasy is not a genre that I would be rushing off out to buy, or to add to my TBR list.
I do like the idea of silencing people who are forever on your back, but perhaps not turning them into snakes, I don’t know — maybe an insect, or perhaps a frog … not quite so scary as a snake.
Thanks for sharing and enjoy your weekend.
Yvonne
I like her books. They are always fun. Here is my post.
Book Beginnings
I’m not familiar with this author, but the lines sound fascinating. I suspect it might even be funny. Thanks for sharing, and for visiting my blog.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen “pouched” in an opening sentence before. Great word.
Thanks for posting your link on Book Beginnings!
New author to me. The beginning made me laugh.
