Book beginnings on Friday: March 18th 2011

Book Beginnings on Friday is a bookish meme sponsored by Katy at A Few More Pages.

Here’s what you do: share the first line (or two) of the book you are currently reading on your blog or in the comments section . Include the title and author so we know what you’re reading. Then, if you are so moved, let us know what your first impressions were based on that first line, and if you liked or did not like that sentence. Link-up each week at Katy’s place.

My beginning today is from a book both Cory Doctorow and my friend Thomas have been gushing about. Thomas more or less ordered me to read it and now I’m finally ready to start.

Among others by Jo WaltonSo here goes….Among Others by Jo Walton.

Thursday 1st May 1975

The Phurnacite factory at Abercwmboi killed all the trees for two miles around. We’d measured it on the mileometer. It looked like something from the dephts of hell, black and looming with chimneys of flame, reflected in a dark pool that killed any bird or animal that drank from it.

Well, it’s certainly enough to keep me reading. It doesn’t give any clear indication about what kind of story this will be, but I’m interested in finding out.

One thing I miss on the kindle is the gorgeous cover, it would have been such a pretty book to look at every time it was laying on the table.

  1. I’ve had this on my wishlist for a few weeks, and reading that beginning makes me even more interested. And every time I see that cover it seems so magical.

Thanks for participating in Book Beginnings!

  2. Ooh that’s great beginning, I wish my current book was that exciting! See what you mean about the cover, a picture on a virtual shelf is just not the same.

  3. Sounds rather disturbing. I agree, I always am sad when I see no pretty covers on my Sony. One of the few things I don’t like about e-readers.
